Some of those who stayed up all night on Christmas Eve had a serious plan to stick to. Have a drink or two, and keep a lookout for something genuinely rare and beautiful: a Full Cold Moon at Xmas.

Not since 1977 has a full moon appeared in the skies at Christmas. The moon’s peak this year occurred at 6:11am EST.

This full moon is called the Full Cold Moon because it happens at the beginning of winter.
